My family and I lived in Misawa for 7 years. We moved back to the states in 2002, but still have some friends in the area. We loved Misawa..my daughter would love to move back...and miss it horribly.

Misawa is a small base in a small, somewhat rural area of Northern Japan. You will not find the same sort of opportunities here you would find in Tokyo. That being said, Misawa puts a lot of work into having a wonderful relationship with the off base Japanese community. You will be expected to be on your best behavior when off base and any acting out, drunken brawls or breaking of the law will have consequences. The base has one of the best relationships of any base with it's host nation and will not risk it.

So what is there to do...If you are interested in Japanese language and culture, there is the Japanese American Friendship club. This group meets off base and is a conversation club...Japanese can practive their English while you can learn Japanese. This group is part of two major events every year..Japan Day (on base celebration of Japanese culture) and American Day (off base celebration of American culture). It is a great way to meet and make Japanese friends. There is a main street out side the gates with small shops and resteraunts. There is a McDonalds in Misawa...great place to go when you feel homesick or want to try a Big Mac with a friend egg on it. There are lots of Japanese book and used goods stores...great places to go if you are into manga, anime or J-Pop.

Miswa gets some serious snow...so much so the base has a small ski slope of its own. Summer is hot and humid (and no AC in base housing or most Japanese homes) but short..the base pool is an indoor pool as it wouldn't be cost effective otherwise. There is both a youth center and teen center, as well as all sorts of clubs. The base offers lots of day trips and discounted travel. Take advantage of as much of it as you can. The secret to Misawa is getting out and doing, going, trying and meeting. The more time you spend off base, getting to know the people and culture, the more fun you will have. Yes, it is a small town. Yes, you'll probably feel a bit cooped up at first (especially during your first winter), but once you adjust, you'll see how wonderful it is. I am soooooo jealous. Be sure to visit the 100yen (the Japanese equivalent of the Dollar Store) for me!
