I want to learn Japanese REALLY badly. Why? I don't know exactly. I guess it's because I'm really getting into it. I watch a little anime, and my favorite singer sings in Japanese/English. I guess, I just think it's beautiful and think that learning to speak it would be enjoyable.
I'm learning Latin right now, and my parents want me to know how to speak a speakable language. My school does not offer Japanese, but does offer Italian and Chinese. Most people don't like Chinese because the teacher is very mean. I might like Italian, and I might pick it up easily if I know Latin, but I don't have a passion for Italian.
I'm considering getting the Rosetta Stone series for my computer. My parents would like me to learn Chinese since they think I'm only young once and I should get to know something for my future since we have excess trade with the Chinese, but I really want to learn Japanese instead.
What I'm asking is: what do you think I should do? I don't plan to do Chinese business.

Also, I don't want to learn both, because the Rosetta Stone series is starting, STARTING at 300 dollars!! I want to learn one. I don't have time to be splurging my money. I'm already going to be multitasking my selected language and Latin.

You need to be comfortable with the decision that you make. if you make the decision because of the influences of others you will resent them for influencing you in a way that youdont need. The entire decision is up to you and those that are around you family and friends need to support your decision in what is important to you.

I tried Rosetta Stone for Spanish. It does not have any translation, grammar or conjugation instructions so it will be very hard to go beyond the basics with it. There is no way to be fluent with it. Their program is based on the same thing where you see these 4 pictures over and over again. I was disappointed especially for the price I paid.

My college uses a software called TeLL me More, by Auralog. It covers not only the basics, but also intermediate or advanced level. It is also a lot less repetitive. My goal was to become fluent so it was perfect for me. It has a lot of different activities: picture/word association, videos, dialogues,..., includes also grammar and conjugation. It has also more content than any other language software. Their speech recognition is great so you can have a dialogue with the computer. You can check out their website at http://www.auralog.com for a free demo and compare too. You can check out independent reviews on the web too Top Ten Reviews or about.com websites.

The best way to learn a language would be through immersion, visiting these countries. Learning a language will require some time. In addition to software, you can have books which are useful as well. Audio CDs like Pimsleur for instance might help you out but you cannot get any feedback on your pronunciation so I did not like it so much

It's your life and your money. Study Japanese. To pacify your parents, remind them that the best electronics are Japanese. (Sony, Toshiba)
