I can't stand to be touched by people. As you can imagine, that has affected a lot of aspects of my life. It doesn't bother me so much when I'm expecting it- like I expect to have to shake hands when I first meet someone- but it still bothers me a little. It bothers me even more when someone accidentally brushes me. Any ideas on why I'm so freaked out?

They are invading your personal space without your permission, and you are sensitive to that perimeter around yourself. It's not unusual, many people feel that way.

We can only guess, a therapist might be able to help your figure it out, but what then...so then you know why you don't like to be touched. You'll probably still not like to be touched.

If I had to guess. You were isolated as a child. There might even be gaps in your memory of childhood. Something back there was a bad touch or there was no touch at all. one extreme or another.

Or

Maybe your nerves are just tweeked and it doesn't feel right.

Only a Dr. or therapist could really help you with this.

Lots... it can be psychological in some form of fear of contact due to disease or embarrassment or shyness. Or it can be a physical condition, some discomfort from oversensitive nerve endings to bad smelling armpits to... whatever. Or psychological feelings of superiority and the sense that others are not good enough. Or, as in my case where I love to touch women's behinds but repress these sensations to absolute respect because I got bopped in the head by someones mother for doing so to her daughter so... look but not feel...

You might have had a traumatization when you were younger. I could also be a case of Gorophobia...i don't know if I spelled that right, but it's the fear of having people around you. It's a phobia that can be over come, so you might want to look into that.

you know its happening and you can shake hands so there is not anything seriously wrong with you. If you have been abused then maybe thats why.
