There were the occasional pirates that would suffer some disfiguring incident. Some would lose an eye, or some would lose a leg, etc. But it was unlikely that many would survive long if they lost all of the above. Many other sailors suffered these injuries too, but a Pirate didn't really have the option of going back home and being a farmer if he was injured, he was a wanted man. So he would usually have to stay a pirate. Then of course, once Hollywood got a hold of the image, they blew it all out of proportion.

Long before he met Jim Hawkins he sailed with the nortorious Captain Hook. One day whilst having a relaxing swim the infamous crocodile appeared and chased them unfortunately Long John was not the best swimmer and with one mighty snap he removed Long Johns leg!

The old bad boy lost his leg when it turned gangerous after getting a skelf(Splinter) in his big toe and no having a big brave masochist on board to have a right good go at it with his sharp dirty cutlass, so was left to putrify, big old scaredy cat, so it was rumoured!!!

He was looking to buy a new pirate ship and had narrowed it down to two.
One was really expensive and would have cost him an arm and a leg.
He went for the slightly cheaper one...

He was off to the woods and lost it during a riding holiday. He was to play golf and got a hole in one - His nickname was 'hoppalot' and was forever running around in circles what with being on one leg and all.
