I'm from NYC, but I was recently in the south for vacation (beaches!) I saw 2 cars and 3 stores waving the confederate flag; one with the Confederate flag higher than the American. What does it mean, nowadays? Is it the same thing it meant during the Civil War?

Does anyone find it offensive? Why or why not?

As a Yankee who moved to the South, I completely understand what you're saying. I was shocked at how many Confederate flags I saw. It made me so sad, because I thought it meant all kinds of bad things. The only time I'd seen one before was in footage of hate crimes or KKK riots, etc. Now that I've lived in GA for a while, I've learned that many people (can't say all, sadly) wave the flag as a symbol of southern pride, nothing more. They aren't saying "I hate northerners" or " I hate non-whites".
I don't quite know why it is so important to some people, and it still makes me unneasy sometimes, but I've learned it's not as negative as I once thought.

I think that the flag is offensive. It was used by the Klan as a symbol of intimidation towards other people. While some may think that it's "just a flag", it's not.
I grew up in southern Indiana and quite a few kids had the confederate flag on their belt buckles or waved it from their pickup trucks. Those people notoriously didn't like anyone who was not white. I beg to differ when people argue that the use of the flag in that way is only a thing of the past. It's not.

Well.... wouldn't expect a Yankee to understand... but it is only offensive to those that wish to take offense... In these days of the perpetually offended and the forever victim it's difficult to do anything any more that some one some where won't protest. Chill... unless someone is overtly being a jackass don't take offense where none is intended.

One word: "LOSERS"

The confederate pathetically lost the civil war..... and only Losers are proud to be associated with that vile piece of fabric.
