For long trips, you also travel fewer miles by air, which improves energy efficiency. For shorter trips, you drive out of your way to get to and from the airport.

Also, fuel efficiency is better at high altitude, which is another reason flying efficiency improves as the distance increases. Short hops, much less efficient.

Another reason flying may be more efficient is that other methods may require long detours. I live at the mouth of a bay, it's a 50 mile drive to the other side of the inlet; by boat it's about 6 miles, by air about 5 miles.

That's almost 70 passenger-miles per gallon of fuel...better than a single occupant Prius.
