I have been involved in theatre since my sophomore year of high school. I have done lights (both setting and running the board), set construction, stage manager, floor/run crew, assistant director, and assistant prop master. I am interested in pursuing a career in technical theatre and I'm just wondering what the best way to do that is? Do I need to go to college and major in theatre? Is there a way to get a job in the field without finishing college? I'm from a small town in the midwest, do I need to move to the coast or to a bigger city? Thank you in advance for your advice!

you should defiantly go to college but not just any liberal arts school with a theater program. you should look for schools that have technical theater programs not just a few classes. some good chooses are NCSA (North Carolina School Of the Arts), Yale School Of Drama, University of Washington or Carnegie Mellon.

There is always work in tech theater but the better your degree is the better work you can get starting off.

You should have a broad understanding of technical elements and a specialty so pick something out you like. but don't be afraid to learn Little of everything.

definitely go to college and take all of the technical theater classes you can take partly because you would be learning so much more to theater than what you already know now.
I thought that I knew a lot about theater before getting into college which i had found out that I had lot more to learn about technical theater once I had started taking classes. personally start off going to a Junior college which most of them do offer classes in technical theater

go to college get your BA or BFA depending on the school if you are from the Midwest look at university of Wisconsin at Madison (I think) they have a good program or they did. Ohio University ,Ohio State and the University of Cincinnati (Ohio). Illinois at Urbana (I think). You don't have to move to the coast to go to school, look at your own state, see what is there. while you don't have to go it is a little easier to get into this business with the degree and work at summer stocks during the summer to get more professional experience. Good Luck!

Broadway is in NYC, not L.A.

Volunteer at the Community Theater in your city, or the local high school or University.
