How do they get in even though the lid is down and there is not enough space to get the shell in?

But the shells are hard, I know the salt thing works i go on patrol with it most nights.

Maybe they were put in, somehow, as eggs and then hatched?!

Place salt around the rubbish bin & they won't live. Salt dries them out & kills them.

They either crawl in or were inadvertently tossed in as eggs or larvae

Very slowly! they don't have a skeletal structure so they can literally ooze into tight places.
