What makes you think anyone needs your permission to contact your employeer? Anyone can call them. The rules of privacy apply to the employeer, and what information they can divulge.

Yes you can.
Be careful that you don't slander or harass
somebody. You could be sued.
Also, use common sense, do not abuse the
practice, calling when he may be busy is not
good ethics.
