These were all in heavy rotation on KYYX "The Wave" in the early-mid 80's. I'm not saying they ALL were good, I'm just saying.. Plus, some I personally wouldn't call New Wave, but radio stations (KYYX, KJET) played them and it might be what you're looking for.

80s music was only popular in the 80s mainly because there was nothing else to listen to. While there were some tremendously good acts in the 80s like Prince, The Police and U2 most 80s pop music was watered down imitations of 70s hard rock, punk and disco recorded with poppy new keyboard sounds. The most interesting development in 80s pop music was the reggae influence although cool people had been listening to real reggae for over ten years.

Well the first answer looksmore like a list of post-punk to me. Elvis Costello is the New Wave man for me, personally prefer his 70's work though. And I saw a lot of surprising answers, I'd always considered X punk, and were they ever popular? And New Order and Joy Division I thought were the archetypical post-punk bands, and didn't think had many famous songs excepting maybe "Love Will Tear Us Apart". But that's why genres are so hard and fun.
