My car has over a hundred thousand miles and lately the odometer has shown different readings- ranging from under a hundred thousand to over two hundred thousand. Is this a computer problem? How do I avoid selling it as miles unknown when I decide to trade it in?

Your instrument cluster is completely electronic (ie; no mechanical cables/linkages...etc).

This is an electronics related problem. A new cluster is expensive. Your best bet is to get a used one from a salvage yard.

This article describes how you would remove a typical BMW instrument cluster. It goes further by removing the PC board, but since you are replacing the whole thing, you have less involved steps.
