Look in preferences on your client (say BitLord) and find the connection preferences. There should be one that says "max half open TCP connections" or something similar. Change that to 500. If you also have one for "max connections per task", change that to 1000. Also, make sure you are port forwarding if you have more than one computer at home. For that you would need to look in preferences again and find the port # it uses. Here is a tutorial:

Download from reliable trackers with lots of seeders, have a fast internet connection, and if you want certain parts of the torrent more than others you can set "priorities" with most torrent clients that will make some parts go insanely fast.

The best way to speed up torrents is to share more (increase your maximum upload). You can also try increasing the maximum number of connections.
Setting either of these too high will cause worse performance though.

torrents is inherently slow - it is overrated.
I have downloaded things much faster by NOT using torrents.
