I do think they had allot of influence on me! I had wall sized posters or my favorite rock bands on my walls. I tried to put meaning to every song. The first concert I went to was in Indy, it was Cat Stevens. Funny thing about those songs, now that that I am older allot of them seem to apply to me. Do not want to put you to sleep so I will be brief. I did homework, studied with the head phones blasting. Even while at college. I think those old songs are allot better to have grown up on than most rap, just hate songs! This might explain some of this younger generation. That music seemed to have a message. Got me this far. I think it helped! I have to say my favorite bands are Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith, to name a couple! If you are not asleep now I better stop. Allot of old memories, to many bands to list.! Saw most of them in concert. Their music gave me a heart! Hard to believe don't you think? Could keep going, do not want to bore you, go away heartbreaker! Do you know what song that came from? To answer your question real fast. That music influenced me allot! I guess because I tried to figure them out. I turned out OK, almost 2 degrees under my belt. That music helped make me through that mess.

From the responses above, I see there's some confusion as to what "heavy metal" means. I was very into acid rock music from the mid-sixties through the end of the seventies, and when the major sixties bands finally slipped, I sort of followed Carlos Santana, who moved over into progressive jazz. The metal tradition, which I associated with Iron Butterfly and Led Zeppelin, split out into different directions: Black Sabbath and Aerosmith seemed like the purists, while Pink Floyd (who was virtually unknown until the seventies) added a more aesthetic touch, and Eric Clapton, whose work with Cream might have qualifed, headed back to his blues origins. People like Lou Reed and Jeff Beck used metal for specific solo works, without making it their signature. Seems like mostly Brits during that phase, with the purists actually being lesser luminaries, however technically competent they may have been. But somehow the genre survived and recovered, maybe because of the cool artwork. I still prefer more aesthetically pleasing sounds.

Queen, Judas Priest, AC/DC, were all 70's bands and were great.

In the 80's, Megadeth and Metallica were my favorite hard rockers.

The 90's gave me Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and such.

Currently I like Powerman 3000, System of a Down and wish Rage Against the Machine would reunite.

Judas Priest, Dio, AC-DC... Those are the gods of the 70s, worshipped by current metal lovers.

The first heavy metal band that was actually influential and paved the way for more speed metal bands was Slayer. Even though I don't like them very much, they are the most influential metal band because they were the first.
