Yes they do. One, there is a age difference, two, the teachers are supposed to be respected by the students, as they are to be learning from these people, three, that also means that the teachers are allowed discipline (old days ruler on knuckles, now more like getting detention).

They used to, but court decisions over the last 25 years have essentially taken the 'authority' away while still leaving the 'responsibility' on the teachers shoulders. It is a catch 22 situation for the teacher...if anything happens with the kids, the teacher is held accountable, but the teacher has no effective authority to stop situations from developing.
Not a recommended career path for anyone other than a masochist.

Yes, teachers do have legal authority over their students. When students are in school, they are subject to the guidance and requests of their teachers. This authority is given by virtue of the mandatory education laws of indivdual states.

no, but it needs to happen soon before theres more gun shootings! kids need discipline. parents need to keep their dumb@sses out of it and let the teaches teach and the school discipline (not abuse but discipline) as it sees fit! bullying, smart mouthing, cell phones should not be tolerated. Kids need their butts whipped! thats the truth.
