In the mid-late 60's I hitch-hiked a lot (from Wisconsin to Delaware at one time). While in the Navy, until I could afford a car, I rode my thumb a lot. I paid back all the nice folks who picked ME up by picking other hitchers. My best pick up was a Russian in Sardinia. He had emigrated from the Ukraine to Italy. We became friends and kept in touch for years after he had moved to the U.S. in Florida. Last I heard, he was someplace in New Jersey.
I had one other 'interesting' ride given me...but this isn't the venue to discuss it (it did involve sex with a pregnant lady).
One weekend after spending it with my eastern shore Maryland gf and taking nude pictures of her, I wound up leaving my Nikon SLR camera in the back seat of one of the people who had given me a ride from Salisbury, Md to across the Virginia line. woo buddy.

I can't drive yet, but if i could i would not pick up a hitch hiker, because they could be a murderer or a rapist or something like that.

My parents once picked up a homeless man while remodeling their home. They offered to let home stay in their home and pay him for helping them. The 1st morning they woke up and he was gone along with their money and any other valuable that he could find. So, I learned from their experience to never trust a stranger :)

Yes, a man who was of african american descent had car trouble and was hitchhiking to try to get to a gas station to call a friend. We gave him a ride to the nearest station which was several mile down the rode. We did it because he looked like he really needed the help and country roads are dark. You run the risk of being run over or attacked by animals.

Their was times that my husband I picked up women with their child because they needed help cause their car broke down. But when it comes to male...I would drive by.... it's not that I am mean it's because I would fear for my life. Because you don't know what a guy can do or if he is carrying a gun or knife. I guess I see too much news.

Well the way things are today it's difficult to show a bit of compassion for others but it's true what Eris says you should feel your inner gut whether it's a good idea or not.

I did once, because the temperature was awful very hot and I saw in this man a need and I put myself in his position and I bet he was asking God for help and I heard that cry from him. He thanked me with a little picture of a flower. But it is within us to know who to pick and who not to.

yes. when I had wheels and extra space, why not help a fellow human being? I've been without wheels as well, and at times the kindness of strangers aided me as well.

I did, but it wasn't a stranger. It was a former classmate from school. I made sure it was him before I stopped. though.
