Depends on what type of self control?

Food, sex, drugs or all together everything.

Benefits one is well rounded. Life has limits all the time. With self control we learn to have limits. People who do not use self control just over indulge in too many things that are usually unhealthy for them.

Basically to develop a level of boundaries. Imagine if a person did not have self-control over their temper. They'd go around beating up people or whatever it took. Self control is a skill that needs work all the time.

True enjoyment.

If you are able to eat unlimited amounts of chocolate per day you'll soon get complacent with chocolate. The economic law of supply & demand says you will reach an "equilibrium" ... or you'll settle at having "X" amount of chocolate bars per day. Additionally, you'll gain mega pounds around the mid-section and butt if you have unlimited chocolate.

Self-control allows us to enjoy the chocolate (rather than let it be complacent) and not get obese. See when we exercise self-control, and then we are "WILLINGLY" limiting the supply. In doing so, we get anticipation. The anticipation creates a truer enjoyment than gluttony.

Self-control works for most stuff except major chemical addictions like tobacco, cocaine, morphine, and for some alcohol & sex.

Satisfying our desires for pleasure through food, sex, Yahoo answers and other pastimes hides the emptiness inside. That emptiness is spiritual starvation. Our soul needs fulfillment. There are many levels of our being, and we often do not take a holistic approach to fulfillment on all these levels. We often only see the easiest, surface level needs -and try to fulfill ourselves on a physical level. Self control on the physical level will give us focus on the other, spiritual or philosophical needs.

It makes you a better person.

Plus there are situations where a lack of self-control can actually kill you. Alcoholism can result from lack of self-restraint with alcohol. Obesity, obviously, can result from lack of self-restraint with food. Drug addictions. Losing everything from excessive gambling.

So... exercise self-control in little situations, and you won't have to worry about controlling yourself in big ones.

Not having it can get you arrested, killed, and lonely.

Having it can get you better things that you weren't willing to wait for and possibilities open up for you than if you didn't have self-control.

To show God that you are worthy of his love. It shows you can resist temptations that are morally wrong (premarital sex, drugs, emotional harrassment to others, etc)
