There's a web site named Morningstar that tracks and charts various mutual funds:

Personnally, I like the T Rowe Price family of funds.

Not many brokers let you "buy-in" to a mutual fund at the $ 500. level...( unless it's in an IRA...or if they charge a " front-end load" )
You may be much better off purchasing a small amount of ETF shares and let your money build for awhile...
Log on to E-trade ( or someone similar) and see if you can open a $ 500. account......then do just a little reading on ETF's ( very similar to funds...cheaper " buy-in", but a charge for each trade....you're not going to trade often, so don't let it bother you)
If you consider this route, look at MXE ( Mexican cef, possible quick, large returns...but " risky") or EWA ( Australia)...slower growth but more " solid"...feeding off the growth of China...selling them metals and materials.
Just a couple of thoughts....talk 'em over with someone, or just read any info you can.

I would suggest INGdirect.com for investing... private message me your email and I will send you a link to start an account with a bonus if you put in 250 dollars for a month in a savings you will get an additional 25 dollars. Then, from there, they have some mutual funds ranging from conservative to risky, and you can diversify. I use it for my ira and my own small mutual funds.
