This is multi-part question:
1) I was wondering, how a dutch person would spell a name that is pronounced "zeff" in english? Is it a common name in the Netherlands?
2) I was told that there are a lot of people with the last name of Nilson/ Nilsen in the country yet when I looked in the phonebooks there are no Nilson's and only 2 Nilsen's. How common is the name?
3) Can you possibly give a link that is a reliable phonebook that I can use?

Thank you for the help

Maybe the spelling of the name in Dutch would be Nielsen, but that is also not a very common name.
Here is a link to the best (former national) telephone book site:

I also never heard of a name pronounced Zeff, the nearest I can think of is Geoff, or Jeff, which can be pronounced and spelled as Sjef in Dutch.

Nilson or Nilsen sounds more "nordic" to me. Danish or Swedish, Norwegin maybe. Maybe there are some but it sure isn't common. It could be NiElsen, but even then ... As of the 2 FF on Zeff, that's not typical Dutch (I wander what is in a name nowadays) either. Two of the same at the end of a name is more common in Germany. Zeff could be Sjef or Jef or maybe even "chef" which could mean the person in question is a kind of "manager" in a factory.
A lot of people who have a phone are registered in www.telefoongids.nl but not all! No cell phones and no secret numbers but it could be a start.
Good luck
