Oh boy, are your friends ignorant.
You will need to get headshots taken, or at least a decent photo to submit to agencies. I'm guessing from your post that you're very young, so why don't you do some school plays and see if you have any talent for acting? Agencies want to see kids that can read aloud well and have some grasp of how to act.
Get some pics taken, submit them to agencies, and see what happens. If they call you for an interview, you may be expected to read aloud in front of a camera. So make sure you can do this well... it's a skill very important to on-camera acting called "cold reading."
You are very close to LA... many casting offices will hold classes or workshops for young people who want to get into the business. These can be as short as a weekend, or longer-term, like over a few weeks, and would be held in the evenings or after school. This is a great way to learn some skills and meet people in the business of casting young people. But you'll have to do some research, and I'll leave that up to you! A good way to start might be google... Santa Clarita casting agency, acting classes... etc.
Good luck... and stop listening to your friends. People just love to tell actors they'll never make it!

Your friends don't have a clue what they're talking about. No one legitimate is going to come up to you and ask you to be an actor and if they do especially at the mall, runaway from them. It's a scam and they want to take your money.
The first thing you need is training. Get into some acting classes. Try going to workingactors.com, click on actors, then training and check those out. You can also pick up a copy of BackstageWest and look at the ads there for local classes. There are tons in the valley. You should also build a resume. Get into theatre, student films etc. Backstage is great for that as well.
If you want to find a legitimate agent to represent you for commercials, TV & film go to Sag.org. Use the dropdown menu on the right labeled 'resources' and choose 'agent information'. On the next screen, on the left choose 'Find a SAG franchised agent' and follow the directions. You can look up agents all over the US, but there are higher concentrations where the work is (Los Angeles, NY, IL, FL, GA etc.)
Then you can send them your headshot, resume, and a cover letter stating that you are seeking representation and wait to see if they call you in for an interview.
Once you have an agent, they will get you the auditions, but until then you can check out actorsaccess.com. You can also see if your state has a film alliance. Sometimes they post audition information for projects filming locally. For theatre, you can go to backstage.com or http://www.actorsequity.org/castingcall/... If you find the audition on the Equity site, you still may be able to go, as long as their not taking appointments from equity actor's only :-) On backstage.com you have to pay to get all of the info, but the initial search is free and you may be able to see enough info to find out the rest on your own without paying.
Oh, and Zoey 101 was actually filmed at Pepperdine U for the first 3 seasons.

They don't have a location in Valencia listed, but they do say they filmed in Santa Clarita :-) No specific place, just the city.
good luck

Act in community hteater and communtiy college theater. Get in touch with Cal Arts in Valencia and the other junior colleges. Get a subscription to backstage west and respond to all the audition ads.
Don't worry about Zoey 101 your not ready.
Oh, and take acting classes. They are your best chance to get better and network with other actors to find an agent.

Hi,
my first advice would be to not rely so much on what your friends say, especially if they tell you things like that.
From my side, I have a couple of things for you that should help you get started.
1) go to my website http://www.actingcareerstartup.com and download a free ebooklet called: What It Takes To Become An Actor. Just click on the link then sign in and you can download it. It will definitely help you to begin to be able to form your own opinion about an acting career.
2) here's another link that has to do with getting an agent. There are certainly different ways to go about it, but what I explain on that page is what I did and what worked great for me that helped me to get two agents in a short period of time.
Those two things should get you right on your way.
Good luck!

You don't need an agent to begin acting. Take some classes, audition for local shows. When you've got some experience/training under your belt, you can submit your resume and headshot to agents, and ask for representation.
If you don't mind the drive over 126, there are some community theatre groups in Ventura. I'd also recommend contacting VATS, the local improv company, to see about classes. Improv is a valuable tool for any actor.

From time to time, agents make the trip to Ventura to troll for actors; they especially go see improv groups (as they do in LA).
