Depends on the engine.
Putting unleaded petrol in a modern diesel engine with a high-pressure injection system (either pumpe-duse or common-rail) can cause serious damage to the pumps and injectors.
Putting diesel in a petrol car can contaminate the catalytic converter.
Putting the wrong fuel in an older engine will usually just mean it wont run until you put the right fuel in.

It is worse to put diesel in a petrol engine. If you put petrol in a diesel tank it will float on the top so if you don't start the engine you can syphon it off.

ok here's the scoop Diesel Engines do not have spark plugs they use compression to make the fuel combust. so gas will not combust as easy as the diesel fuel. so there is no way that'd work.
and gas engine (petrol) if you use diesel in that the spark would not be enough to make the deisel ignite and if it does the vehicle will run really crappy and smell soooo... bad
because diesel is fuel/oil mix so that's like driving a car thats burning alot of oil.

petrol in a diesel, putting petrol in a diesel can cause it to run very very high rpms and blow up(sling a rod or piston) Diesel in a petrol will cause it to shut down, no permanent damage.

putting diesel in a gas engine is worse, the diesel engine will still run with the gas in it but the gas engine wont ,its not good for either of them but id rather not have to clean either one of them out, good luck.

I think either will stop the engine and require the attention of a mechanic.
