I don't understand. You can update it on a desktop, why not a laptop?

If you mean the graphic chip or card: Because you do not have a PCI-Express slot on a laptop.

Also the top end graphics chips are now pulling as much power as the CPU. Laptops are not designed to supply that much power from a limited battery, or get rid of that much heat.
