You really need to decide what you want from a laptop first.
There are the ultra-portables. Small light and easy to carry. But are expensive, have small screens, less battery life and tend to have less horsepower.
At the other end there are the desktop replacements. Not really as powerful as a desktop, but a good try. Bigger screens, more CPU and graphics horsepower. But they are heavy, chew though the battery quickly and are expensive.
In the middle there are systems for a variety of prices that have reasonable power, reasonable screens, etc.
All laptops are a compromise between power, weight and price. You need to decide how you are going to use this system and what aspects are important to you.

The Dell 1520, just out three weeks ago would be one good choice. It comes in an alloy case and can be customized with all the top options.
