Honestly, As a guy.
If I were in his shoes. Just send "something" on a regular basis.
I wouldn't be picky. A news paper or a pack of gum. Just anything to know that you're still there.
Just make sure it can stand the heat.

You could check out this site, http://soldiersangels.org/index.php?page=home
They have a lot of ideas for things you can send to your friend. They also have the list of prohibited items - like risque magazines - And they also give you links to the USPS forms you'll need.
If you contact me on Yahoo360, I can give you more info on more organizations that can be of benefit to the both of you.

cookies, and any other baked goods that hold shape well when jostled about in shipping... rice krispie treats do well.. cookies do well if wrapped in ziploc bags, then packaged so they don't shake around too much, otherwise u end up with cookie crumbles, which when added to a cup fo milk, still taste delicious.
personal toiletries that he can't get there, like his favorite Axe body wash, or stuff like that.
And of course, most importantly, pictures of yourself. he can get in trouble, techincally, if they're nudes, so just send tastefully provocative ones, or pictures of u and him together, or stuff like that, he'll love it.
And by the way, please, thank him for me for his commitment to the nation.

You can send him his favorite snacks, dvd's, pictures of you, magazines, books, pretty much anything that may occupy him when he has down time. you could also make a cd of songs that remind you of him and send it to him. My husband always loves that!
