Hi Gail; I have always fed fruit to my horses as a treat. It's usually apples, melons, and the such..Citrus is a good one, but usually a horse won't eat things that will make them sick. I make home made ginger bread cookies for mine, but leave out the ginger..They LOVE them..I use them as a reward during training. Sincerely;Linda

I read a study once that tried to figure out what FLAVORS horses like best. Although it's common to give apples and carrots to horses, they actually PREFER strawberries!

Too much of any type fruit can cause diarrhea but given in moderation, fruit is fine for horses. Watermelon, including the RIND, is a big favorite. If your horse likes oranges or tangerines, given in moderation they should be OK.

My horse LOVED grapes and raisins. And pears!

About hand feeding a horse -- MOST horses are fine with this. Just because SOME horses can't be hand fed treats, doesn't mean that NO horses can be. My horse was fed treats everyday of his life (all 34 years of it) and was the sweetest, gentlest, most well-behaved horse on the planet!

A horse is a huge animal, and can tolerate most any food in moderation - meaning things given as a treat aren't going to harm him physically, even if they are pure sugar.
The post that mentioned sugary treats making a horse aggressive...that horse is responding to the idea of getting a treat, not physically reacting to the treat. I don't see how you can give a horse enough sugar to get him hyped up (like a kid can get on sugar.) I, too, have had horses that you could hand feed goodies and they never got hateful - and others that got pushy after only one hand offered treat. Just don't let her get in the habit of taking food (unoffered) out of your hand - you might come up missing a finger some day!

Horses' digestive tracts are funny... sometimes they can tolerate the strangest foods, like nibbles of pizza and sips of coke, then other times too much of their regular food can send them into the gas colic from hell. One problem is, if they like the taste of something, they'll tend to overeat it (or eat it until it's taken away). If what you gave was a taste and the horse tolerated it fine, then it's probably okay to feed as an occasional exotic treat.

It is true that horses around the world can be used to much different diets than what is acceptable feed here. For example, sheiks have been known to raise their Arabians on dates and camel's milk(!). So, I guess it's all what their stomach juices get used to digesting...

just like people horses can favour or dislike certain things! One of my horses adores sour cream and onion crisps of all things!! Basically if a horse likes something I wouldnt deprive them of it - but you should only give it to them in moderation as a treat. Too much of anything in the form of a treat is bad - so maybe once a week or so would be enough for her.

They are fine, mine love oranges as long as you skin them! picky beasts.
A lot of french horses get oranges instead of apples for some reason.
My veg shopping raises some eyebrows at the supermarket, 6 swedes, 6 bags parsnips, 2 bags turnips, 3 sacks oranges, 6 bags apples and a sack of carrots!!!

Fruit is good for horses, as long as its not too much or too often. It can give them tummy problems and the extra sugar isn't too good for them either.
