They can! They are air breathing mammals like us. However, out of water they have problems from their body weight pressing on their rib cages, and their skin drying out. You may not have noticed, but they have no legs to support them and can't walk about!

A dolphin, the mammal, could breath on land. It can be kept out of the ocean for a good while, as long as relatively cool salt water is kept on the body.

It is a little unclear exactly what your question is. First of all, dolphins are air-breathing mammals. Thus, even though they live in water, they must come to the surface to breathe. Then, when they go under water, they hold their breath. They have adapted to living in the water, thus their stream-lined body shape, with appendages shaped like paddles. They could not live on land because they would have no way to move about.

Dolphins are not stupid .and theyb already breathe air.
Maybe they foresaw what would happen on the land ,so they decided to evolve in the sea ,thinking it was a safer place
And still people manage to get them killed in vast numbers

it's not a 'what if' because dolphins do breath air on land.

There would be a mass migration of humans into the water. Dolphins are ferocious killers and hold a grudge from when the humans banished them to the seas so long ago. Its just like that Treehouse of Horror episode from The Simpsons. They keep on jumping out of the water because they hate it there. Its all in their eyes. Just look into the eyes of the next dolphin you see. Pure evil.

Technically, they can. They only die when they're on land because they're big and heavy and eventually get crushed by their own weight, or at least it is for whales.
