I will be getting into a government class next year and will be voting next election and I know this may sound stupid but I have no idea which "side" I am on. I am pro-choice, I don't care if homosexuals get married and have kids, pro-gun, pro-death penalty so any help?

Independent...You're never going to find a group where everyone agrees on every point.

I would guess that you are a Democrat, although pro-gun, pro-death penalty is a little bit more Republican than Democrat.
This is the way Democrats and Republicans typically think on certain issues:
Who favors the position more
Pro-choice -Democrats
Gay rights - Democrats
War - Republicans (and more soldiers are Republican)
Less Taxes - Republicans
Better help for the poor and disabled - Democrats

Democrat

If you have heart, you are a democrat. If you have brains, you are a Republican. If you are a nut, you are something else.
That is too simple. Let's try:
If you are a socialist, vote for the democrat. If you are self-reliant, vote for the lying Republicans, who will wimp out. And there is still little but nuts in the other parties.
I am trying to be helpful, but it is hard.
If you are dirt poor, vote for the Democrats, who say they will help you, but will really destroy your family. If you are filthy rich, vote for the Republicans. If you want to stay confused, be an independent. You know what happens to people who stand in the middle of the road!
Haven't I done a wonderful job of helping you decide?

Democrate have more freedom of choice in my opion, not only do they choose whether to be liberal or not (in which they can choose whether to support changing government or not), but they also have the power to give people the right to choose aswell.....such as abortions etc etc.....

Republicans have many more governmet restrictions and would do everything by the book

So if there was a debate on abortions...
Democrats would say that abortion is a womans choice and would therefore make it legal
Republicans would make it illegal

Don't vote on a certain candidate "just b/c" you take a quiz that says you are one thing or the other. You should really do the research on all the candidates and find out what they stand for and if they sound like someone you want holding office.

And please, for the sake of all our future, if you are not sure, don't vote b/c you've heard the name of feel that you don't need to leave anything blank. Better to leave something blank than be responsible for putting someone not qualified into office.

Don't worry about labels - vote for the person that you believe represents your views. Too bad that you basically can't trust anything they say before, during or after an election, but what are you going to do since they are all the same?

You don't have to classify yourself as one side or another, but if you insist, here is how you determine:

If you tend to favor increased taxes for socialized spending, such as schools, health care, welfare, government programs, etc. which provides more benefits directly to the people, then you lean more toward democrat.

If you tend to favor decreased taxes so that businesses can pay employees more, and favor greater military spending, and a reduction in the number of government programs (less money for schools, welfare, etc.), then you lean more toward republican.

You shouldn't feel pressure to join any one party.

Neither the Rebuplicans nor the Democrates, nor any party on earth is always right or always wrong. They are sometimes "right" sometimes "wrong". Any person who learns to think for themsleves, rather than being told what to think, will sometimes disagree with his or her party, no matter what party you choose.

P.S. You don't even need a party to register to vote, you can also register as an "independant".

Why worry about it. Independent is perfectly fine. Vote for the candidate that you believe will do the best job, regardless of party.

If you are going to give time and money, besides your vote, shouldn't it be for a candidate you believe in, not just a "side".

You actually dont have to pick a side. You can evaluate every candidates stance on issues and vote for the one who most closely matches your beliefs....contrary to what you might gleen from YA....politics isnt meant to be a bitter war between two sides
