What are the most important things in life in terms of universal values applicable at all times to all humans?

1) at all times: in the past, at the present, in the future

2) to all humans: different cultures, different genders. different religious background

3) under all circumstances: among members of a family, in work setting between nations

Bear in mind that I am asking for universal values not universal code of conduct as some of the ten commandments which are universal enough.

Please sustent your answer. Don't respond only by saying "trust, compassion and honesty". Include a reason with your answer and why you think are universal (at least the source). For example "Self Respect" because once a person has self-respect, the person's dignity will never be lessened. Self-Respect is the core of all religious and philosophical thoughts. For this, Confucius said: "Do not be concerned about others not appreciating you. Be concerned about you not appreciating others"

I don't and I couldn't and I wouldn't want to.
And Confusius says on that: "Better a diamond with a flaw then a pebble without one"

the value of choice
not freedom. all people seem willing to give up freedom. to exist in a society itself represnts the surrend of that to live within certain guidlines, perspectives or whatever you want to call it. (thats nearly enuff to vcover that). but neither the complete surrender of freedom - people like to be able to choose for themselves. hence our ability beyond a certian point to have diffrent values.and styles, if you would.

the value to be
try and threaten or destroy that by any method and the results can be rather extreme. from an explosion of violence, to the acts of sucide and all the grounds not covered inbetween.

value of core connections
within each person so it seems there is a 'core' that most people dont allow the majority to 'connect to'. thus they arent so quickly/greatly affected to greatly by minor put downs, expectations by general interactions lest the are overwhelming (for example the background perspectives of a society that is grown up in). but those that have a direct connection to the core of the individual greatly or quickly affect them. therefore there can be a great value to with that.

value of perception
for many the percieved value of themselves and the percieved value of a(n) other(s). no matter wether how a persono whants to place themselves with beliefs around that they will be affected by it as it plays a part in social structures
there are I presume some that really go dont believe in it - but then they would exist outside of society as they wouldnt have an involvement in it.

thats a few things that have fairly quickly come to mind as I let my mind run quickly though life. thats not to say I may like or want to agree with some of those aspects - thats just what I've observed, as values that seem to fit your 3 critera.

That All Human life is precious!

If we held this people would think twice (unlike the Bush Administration) about war, terrorism, pollution, crime etc... When we do even a small act of theft we in affect harm another life if you value all life then you would only do it as a necessity (like stopping a tyrant like Hitler or George Bush).

There is only one universal value that I know of and it is universal, not just a human concept like the quotation you have used.
That is self defence.
Any species, human, alien, animal or even plant life, has a universal right to defend itself. All living things have a right to protect themselves to ensure their survival.

one element, besides the certainty that no longer unavoidably a value, that has lasted for the duration of all 3 of your standards is the phobia of death and an attempt to dispel it. you will discover the effect of this interior the pyramids, historic rituals - ie the chinese language custom of burning funds for deceased ancestors to learn status interior the after lifestyles, the formation of religions, etc. it is seen each and every the place via all.

Hmmm... pretty heavy question...
I'd say love. To love yourself and love each other is what makes the world go around. Its one of the things that is the foundation of who we are. You cannot love you're neighbour if you cannot love yourself. Knowing who you are and what you are or what you would aspire to be/become. And being true to yourself. In being true to yourself then you can live and love others as you do yourself and accept others for who they are and what they are.

Values are a root to disappointment, so I don't value anything. Therefore, any claim that a value is universal will be untrue.

I would have thought loyalty and self-sacrifice were high ideals common to all times, cultures and religions.
