Well, it's either the last book I read, the one I'm reading now, or the next book I'll read ...
I'm sorry, but your 'question' is IMPOSSIBLE to answer ... and I'm tempted to say 'The Bible' because that is the 'best book' ever sold (by 'volume' over time) ... but because I don't know who you are, or what 'type' of fiction you like to read, I can't 'recommend' any ONE book as 'best' even 'right now' ... Try reading ANY of Andrew M. Greeley's books (there are many different 'genres' of fiction and also good 'non-fiction' to choose from, and you don't 'have to be a Catholic' to read any of them ... in fact, it usually helps if you are NOT a Catholic, because he 'pokes fun' as us Catholics frequently), or anything by Isaac Asimov (same broadness of books, but basically 'atheistic'), and you'll not be reading the 'best book right now' but a REALLY GOOD BOOK FOR THE AGES.

Hey have you read "the house of the Scorpion" by Nancy Farmer its really interesting book hear read the back.

"Matteo Alacran was not born; he was harvested. His DNA came from El Patron, lord of a country called Opium--a strip of poppy fields lying between the united states and what was once called Mexico. Matt's first cell split and divided inside a petri dish. Then he was placed in the womb of a cow, where he continued the miraculous journey from embryo to fetus to baby. He is a boy now, but most consider him a monster-- escept for El Patron. El Patron loves Matt as he loves himself, because Matt is himself.

As Matt struggles to understand his existence, he is threatened by a sinister cast of characters, including El Patron's power-hungry family, and he is surrounded by a dangerous army of bodyguards. Escape is the only chance Matt has to survive. But escape from the Alacran Estate is no guarantee of freedom, Matt is marked by his difference in ways he doesn't even suspect"

Do you mean a contemporary book or just one still in publication?

One of my favorites (best for me) - is Hocus Pocus by Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

P.S. I love the way people answer Harry Potter to every question! Even where it CLEARLY does not apply.
