Odd socks end up in duvet covers. People stand on Your Biro's and throw them away without confessing. Staples just get used and hair bands end up down your skirting boards and under the carpets.

I once asked a similar question in the category of paranormal phenomena of Yahoo! Answers.

When I was in the 4th grade, I was sitting alone in my classroom, writing homework. My pencil rolled off the desk and dropped on the floor. I heard it land. I looked for it everywhere, but it had disappeared. Being a little kid, I didn't mind crawling around the entire classroom. There were no nooks where it could be hidden from view.

I looked from wall to wall. I even considered the possibility that it hooked on the desk or my clothes. No, it didn't. I even opened my desk to check. No pencil. With the determination only little kids have, I kept looking for 15 minutes, crawling around every inch of the classroom. The pencil had vanished.

Where did it go?

1) There was NO ONE else around. School was deserted. I know I was alone, because it was locked. So, no one took pencil.

2) It was not a memory lapse. I dropped the pencil, heard it land, and then looked for it.

3) It ABSOLUTELY was no where in room. I crawled around every inch. It did not hook on my clothes, nor bounce onto another seat. As I said, being a little kid, I was determined to find it !!!

Regarding socks, I have heard that they can squeeze though the drain of the washing machine. You could test this theory by henceforth putting all your socks in a mesh, zippered bag (like they sell at The Container Store), and washing them together. After about five years of relentless searching, I had about 20 pairs of socks with no mates. Otherwise inexplicable.

Here's another weird story. I had a photograph I thought I put in the top drawer of my desk at home. When I looked for it, it was not there, so I started removing everything large enough to conceal it. I felt the top side of the drawer just to make sure it wasn't snagged. I looked thoroughly. It simply was not there. A buddy came over. He remembered seeing the photo in the drawer. He was even more vigorous about searching because he was convinced I had put it in the drawer. He started pulling everything out, including the drawer itself, and looking at every possible surface to see if it was stuck somewhere. He looked inside the (now empty) rack where the drawer had been. Nothing.

About an hour later, I opened the drawer again, and the foto was there. He had not put it there. I had checked after he left! No one else was home. It was not a joke someone was playing on me. It was just.....there.

There is a lovely book around called 'A Place Called Here' by Irish writer Cecilia Aherne. It features a place called 'Here where all the missing things go. Socks, car keys, pens and people. It is really enchanting and a lovely read!

It also answers your question - if you choose to believe it!
