Both carriers are good. They both have their pros and cons. The plans are about the same with both. The thing you need to know is that even though they're both nationwide, one will work better than the other depending on your location.

AT&T (Cingular) doesn't work where I live. At all. You can't even get a signal out here with one of their phones. I live in Wyoming which is a saturated market so it's understandable that AT&T doesn't want to make a move out here. Obviously, Verizon is a better choice for me.

Verizon, on the other hand, doesn't own a single tower in Oklahoma. All of the coverage they have in Oklahoma comes from roaming agreements with other carriers. While you can make a phone call out there, the service isn't very good. AT&T would be the way to go out there.

The best way to decide between the two would be to ask around in your area to find out who seems to be happier with what carrier. If they both seem to work the same, you could look at the major advantages of both.

Verizon's customer service is amazing. They've been ranked in the top 2 (going back and forth between 1 and 2) with consumer reports ever since they bought out Air Touch ten years ago. AT&T's customer service is awful. This is not the fault of the employees, but the fault of the company itself. They pressure their employees to do x number of things x number of times in x amount of time. They also supported their sales representatives to put data packages on new customer accounts without the customer knowing about it (although that came to a stop when the press got a hold of it a few months ago).

AT&T, on the other hand, has awesome phones. You can customize them to do pretty much whatever you want. You can take them overseas and use them in Europe. Verizon phones are pretty much useless outside of North America. They also lock down their phones so that you don't have fully functional bluetooth capabilities. All of Verizon's phones use the same User Interface which some people like and others hate.

So really, it comes down to what works where you live. If they both work, choose whichever of the above is more important to you (customer service or cool phones).

Figure out the furthest place you visit from where you live. example a friend who may live in the country, or further suburbs from you. See if they have service, and how it works for you. Both Cingular & Verizon have good service. Cingular does offer rollover minutes, which are good for a year.

Also poll your family and friends, see which carrier they have. They are close to you. There are also free mobil to mobil, which is another good factor. Be aware of roaming charges too--get a phone with free roaming!

Cingular is now AT&T and is the most expensive cellphone provider. Verizon has reasonable plans and you get more minutes, the coverage is area is geat too (at least it is in Michigan). I currently have T-Mobile and love, love, love them...good prices, plans, coverage and customer service.

relies upon.. r u speaking appropriate to the service area? or service frequently? At&t has palms down the excellent alternatives for telephones, Verizon is robust at the back of them.. yet no it is straightforward to compete with Verizon's insurance. besides the actual incontrovertible fact that t-cellular isn't formally the less dropped calls service, meaning that At&t has had greater suitable than T-cellular yet that doesn't advise that verizon is third.. which ever service you pass with you have gotten a dropped call perhaps as quickly as a twelve months perhaps as quickly as a month.. yet you will, and not constantly will or not that's your service, it must be the guy you're speaking to.. yet againa the main solid is Verizon. wish this facilitates.

If you're in a city then either should have good coverage. If you are out in the country side then ask others who have a cell phone what they have and how they like it.

check the coverage maps on both companies.
