People who humiliate other people may believe humiliating others glorifies them, but it does not. The most that it does is cause fear in others and they may compliment the humiliator in order not to become the humiliated, but in reality the humiliator has no friends and, as others have said, is really empty inside. The only way they can feel like they are getting ahead (they really never get ahead) is through destruction. But the only true means of getting ahead is constructive and a person who gets ahead constructively brings everyone else along with him/her.

ok so, if you want to do good in life...socially or professionally then the idea is to be in a more desirable position. some people do acheive this through hard work (professionally). socially, they may be more dependable/available, talkative, and so on. that's kind of the normal way of doing things. the other tactic to acheive this is a more lazy way of doing things. instead of rising up through hard work and dependability....some people chose to beat other people down to give themselves the feeling they are above everyone else. they are real bastards. it's kind of a way to prevent anyone else from moving in on their unearned place in life. it's a weak persons tactic

Usually it's feelings of inferiority or lack of self-confidence. If you're truly a confident person, you're not bothered by skills and abilities of other people. People with a complex will deal with their feelings of inferiority by putting the people around them down because it makes them feel better about themselves. So don't hate such people, pity them and walk away. They have their own personal hells.

they're mean. although they may show a tough exterior and laugh when someone gets hurt they're truly depressed on the inside...but would rather humiliate others than to show their true feelings because that would make them seem weak.

I actually like Matt Groening's answer to this question:

"Why do people belittle you?"
"Because they want you to be little."

Perhaps it's an oversimplification of your question, but I like what it implies when you think about it.
