It cost more money. But I dont think the service gets much better.

The HMO is a stupid organization, but paying for private insurance varies from state to state, and if your mother has any pre-existing conditions you will either pay more or she won't get accepted.
Try to go with her if you can and ask a lot of questions. The best thing a patient can do for herself is to be quite knowledgeable about her body. Then you can fight the system a bit. There is lots of available information on the internet, and you should be your own best advocate. Don't let them push you around! Good luck!
