I have 4 and they have never bit me yet...Depends on the turtles personality. If you are unsure use gloves. They won't tear your finger off but they will pinch and they have a good grip too...

There is a certain way to hold a turtle as turtles do not like to swim in the air. Holding them with both hands on the upper and lower part of the shell is good. Never put their head towards your face always pick them up so their face is away from yours.

1. Should you hold a pet turtle? No- it stresses them, sort of like a 20' tall giant holding you would stress you.

2. Can they bite? Turtles do not have teeth, but they do have sharp edges to their jaws. Small turtles can deliver a bit of a pinch and most bigger turtles can hurt. Not many turtles can bite through human skin.

3. Will it bite? Possibly, but not very often. It will usually try to crawl out of your grasp and mayb scratch you in the process.

Your pet turtle sure will try to bite. He/she has a limited range of motion though, so you're probably safe from a bite. You should wash your hands though after handling the thing, they carry salmonella, which isn't the most pleasant thing to get.

A vet I used to work for always had a standard answer for "Will it bite?"...Anything with a mouth can bite. That doesn't mean it will, it just means it can if it wants to. Just remember to keep your hands away from it's mouth when you pick it up, hold towards the back of the shell. The more you handle it, the more it will get used to being handled and the less likely it will be to bite you. Reptiles and amphibians don't have the brains that we do, but they can get used to being handled without any stress. And always remember to wash your hands before and after handling them, they can transmit Salmonella to us, and we can transmit germs from our hands to them as well.

it depends on how you hold it, there are ways to hold it so they *cant* bite you... also, if you start young and keep holding it, it will become domesticated and will be less likely, but there is always that chance...
