Hello. my ID is Ms. Dell and I am very excited to respond to your question.
Laptops will definitely, if not already, replace desktop computers. The Dell M2010, which can be seen here http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m2010?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs, would definitely out-perform a wonderful desktop computer any day.
With the XPS M2010, you’ll have a front row seat for screenings of all your favorite movies and videos. Sporting a 20.1-inch widescreen SXGA+ display with TrueLifeTM technology, the M2010 offers a 1680 x 1050 resolution and a seemingly endless array of brilliant colors. Backed by 256MB of dedicated power with the ATI® MobilityTM RADEONTM X1800 graphics card, the M2010 offers big power for multimedia and gaming.
The HD is so big that it could definitely be a desktop. 500GB (2x250GB) 5400RPM Hard Drive
The RAM is so big: 4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz (2 Dimms)
No way I would pass this notebook and buy a desktop. No way.
You have a great day now.

Laptops under perform compared to desktops.
They cost more, have mobile processors (cut down versions of desktop ones) and have less upgrade options.
In the future, if the above problems can be dealt with, there is no reason for laptops to replace desktops

Yes desktops are getting smaller as well. Just a lot of wasted weight and space in desktops.

Not even close.
They both do the exact same thing one is for stationary use and wasn't intended to be moved. The 2nd was designed for protable use and it's sole function was for moving around.
So your answer is still NO
