Is their a way to find out ratings on the most popular brokerage firms out there to know which ones are the best?

SFO Barrons and Smart Money has done their rankings on what you see look at each one of their websites. Or just do a search for top internet stock brokers.

If you are looking for a full service firm, go to Edward Jones. I recommend them to everyone. They will keep you out of trouble and have strong internal controls, something that is lacking in many firms.
If you are looking for a discount brokerage, go to gomez.com and you will need to figure out what features are important to you.

Try to find a broker with low commissions who doesn't charge you regular fees simply for keeping an account open. All three of the following should fit the bill:
www.tradeking.com
www.zecco.com
www.scottrade.com
Make sure you read the fine print before signing up.
