No, the movie is based on a short FICTION story written by Stephen King. You are familiar with the term "fiction," right? It means it's not real.
There's people spreading rumors that it's based on a true story, probably started to sell more copies of his book (which was lame) or tickets to the movie but it's FICTION.
The movie is based on a story, 1408, in his book of short stories. I think the title is EVERYTHING'S EVENTUAL. But it's a lame book. I bought it thinking the story might shed some light on the movie but, my mistake, they should say it's LOOSELY based on the short story.

Religion didn't just explain death, it was used to explain everything early man didn't understand. As time wore on the people running the local religions realized they had a power over the people around them. As we all know power corrupts. Those "priests" of the time often abused their power and used it for wealth and control. In later religions society had changed some and wanted security so religion picked up the slack and tossed in moral values as well.

Now that we have that settled, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn that I can sell you, real cheap.
