I think it is nice Shimon Peres was elected. He has served Israel in a number of different capacities in his 80 plus years on earth. It is nice that he can cap his political career with this job.

Remember, that the presidency in Israel is a ceremonial job, much like Queen Elizabeth is the head of state of Great Britain. Power will continue to reside in the office of the Prime Minister, who will still be Ehud Olmert. Peres will need to use his gravitas and the weight of his political office to push for peace. However, his formal powers overall will be rather limited compared to that of the Prime Minister

As you may or may not know, the president in Israel is a figurehead position with no real power. Shimon Peres was unable to accomplish anything while in power (other than make things much worse) due to his "peace process" ideas, what makes you think he'll do anything of note now?
