Yes. It passed Congress originally in 2001, has been amended subsequently, and is in force currently.

The Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act (Patriot Act) was passed shortly after 9/11. I believe Russ Feingold was the only Senator to vote against it. It had a sunset clause which expired on Dec. 31, 2005. Shortly thereafter, it was reauthorized and is law.

If you're an American citizen, then contact your local congressman to inquire further. I'm sure they would be happy to explain the matter further. You may find your congressman's contact information here (C-span is quite helpful): http://www3.capwiz.com/c-span/dbq/officials/.

The original USA PATRIOT Act was passed in 2002.
A renewal and extension was passed in 2005 or 2006.

Both are still on the books.
