Wow, what a mix of info you've received. First of all, do not use Craig's List for auditions. I can't imagine anyone legitimate would use Craig's List where Backstage is the industry standard and has been for MANY years.
ActorsAccess is another good option. If you subscribe to ShowFax it will be free to submit yourself for auditions. A great deal if you don't have an agent and you're in LA.
If you want to find a legitimate agent to represent you for commercials, TV & film go to Sag.org. Use the dropdown menu on the right labeled 'resources' and choose 'agent information'. On the next screen, on the left choose 'Find a SAG franchised agent' and follow the directions. You can look up agents all over the US, but there are higher concentrations where the work is (Los Angeles, NY, IL, FL, GA etc.)
Then you can send them your headshot, resume, and a cover letter stating that you are seeking representation and wait to see if they call you in for an interview.
Once you have an agent, they will get you the auditions, but until then you can check out actorsaccess.com. For theatre, you can go to backstage.com or http://www.actorsequity.org/castingcall/... If you find the audition on the Equity site, you still may be able to go, as long as their not taking appointments from equity actor's only :-) On backstage.com you have to pay to get all of the info, but the initial search is free and you may be able to see enough info to find out the rest on your own without paying OR you can go to your local bookstore or newsstand and look at their print publication (new every Thursday) for free.
Backstage is also a great resource for theatre, student film, and all type of auditions.
Extra Work
http://www.centralcasting.org/LA/actors/registration.html
http://billdancecasting.com/
http://extrasaccess.com/
Central and Bill Dance charge a fee to join and yes that is normal for companies that hire extras. They are not 'agents' they are companies that do a service and that's that. ExtrasAccess is new to me. It's an offshoot of ActorsAccess which is more for people looking for principal work and even though I've never used it, I trust it because of the people it comes from. Getting started is free, I'm sure there's a fee along the way somewhere, but I've never used it so I don't know where that comes in.
If you do use Craig's List despite the warnings, I suggest never going alone, take pepper spray with you, and do not change your clothes at their location. There are so many creeps out there...
One other resource for LA actors is workingactors.com. Go there, click on actors, then check out all the different sections! That will keep you busy for a long time :-) I think it's a great site (originally a $30+ book you had to buy to get all that info). People do pay to get listed in the book so I can't vouch for the validity of company of claims made by them, but all of the companies I've dealt with through them have been great. Just check them out for yourself.
Good luck!

Backstage.com has been around for many years.
In New York, Backstage is the publication used by the majority of NY wannabe actors, to find auditions.
Backstage has an excellent reputation and has been around for years.
It is the ONLY publication I use when seeking auditions or generally want to find outwhat is going on in the NYC market for actors.
Anyone can post on Craigslist, therefore the information you find may not be legitimate and could potentially put you in a harmful situation.
I don't recommend using Craigslist.
There is no way to confirm the legitimatcy of ANY of the Craigslist postings.

A lot of people swear by backstage, but I've never been a fan and Craigslist isn't horrible, but if you're serious about acting you might want to look into
http://www.lacasting.com and
http://www.actorsaccess.com
both sites are something you have to pay to be on, but they aren't very expensive. lacasting is a $20 set up fee and then $10 a month with different fee levels depending on how many pictures and how much video time you want on your page. Actorsaccess is $2 per submission or $68 a year. Both of them are worth it!
Basically when you sign up with either of them you create a page for yourself with pictures, your resume, contact information, etc. You fill out some profile questions and they send you casting calls based on your profile. Or you can just search through their listings of calls and submit yourself. Both are updated constantly, and are very busy sites. Both offer extras calls as well.
Good luck!

Serious actors don't use craigslist to find auditions.

Professional actors do use craigslist! I know that for a fact. But I do admit backstage.com is better and there are also more sites available on the net that are better. Before paying for anything always check with BBB . Good luck.

Ebay all the way! You get buyer & seller protection, you can check out feedback. It also depends on what you're selling or buying, but I'm an Ebay gal!
