The umpire's job is to control the game, so that attitude is part of the job.

As far as the strike zone, it's human nature, positioning, and the fact that the ball is coming in at over 90 mph, that makes different zones.

The MLB office has a crew of evaluators and supervisors. I find it unusual that everyone was not complaining last year in the lockout of minor league umpires when college and HS scabs took their spots but the best in the business have to be questioned every call?

Plus the perception of the strike zone is based on how the plate umpire processes the visual information regarding location of the pitch.

The announcers (especially ex players) have no clue what the real rules of the game are. Do not trust anything they say until verified by the rules book.

First of all you have to realize umpires don't have the luxury of seeing the replay, like I bet you do, plus they only have one view not two, and they see the play at full speed without a chance to see a slow motion view. As far as ball and strikes, each umpire has the same strike zone, the knees and the arm pits of the batter. But their calls depend on their judgment where the ball crosses the plate, whether it's low, high. inside or outside. Catchers are taught to frame the pitch to make the umpire think a certyain pitch was over the plate when it wasn't. The umpires report to their league's (al, nl,) presidents.

When you go to the stadium and watch there are MAYBE two calls on balls and strikes you might disagree with. TV makes it easy to be an umpire, and even then sometimes the camera doesn't help. The men in blue are the best officials of any sport there is. As to the strike zone on TV, the camera is mounted on the center field wall or beyond, it's off to the right to see past the pitcher, and even after adjusting for that, it's hard to call along with the ump. Give 'em a break.

Baseball umpires make 99% of their calls correct. They only have a split second to make the call. Instant replay in slow motion show how correct their call is. As far as the strike zone, the ball only has to go over any part of the plate, to be called a strike;it can hit the front edge of the plate and the cather catches it outside its a strike. Remember the annoucers are not inpartial. Also as long as the plate umpire is concisent with his calls neither side will complain. When the player argues a strike call its because he was fooled by the pitch(looking for one pitch, got something else).

the person that is in charge of the mlb umpires is rich garcia. as far as how many calls are missed a game, i disagree with you. a home plate ump may have to make 1000 calls behind the plate and if he misses one or two, his percentage is.999. that is pretty good. you also have to remember that the ump ony has one shot at making the call. its not like he can slow it down or review like in football. mlb umpires do a great job.

The plays are close and they are human. They do a great job of controlling the game.
