Maybe because they are less likely to impose their own emotional baggage onto the client?

So that their female clients can feel at ease and then start off a brief affair which f***s up their heads even more because they fall in love with the therapist who sadly has 2.4 children and then she turns into a psycho and plans to kill him and then... :-)

Because it is thought that they would be smarter and more understanding like a father figure, or follow in the steps of Freud. Not necessarily true, but that's the theory.
