Brake dust. The front disk brakes do the majority of the work. Also the rear brakes on a lot of cars are drum brakes and any dust created stays in the drum or at least away from the wheels.

I note you asked about wheels, not brakes. Not sure where you got the 500% figure, but I can't disagree.
They get dirtier faster because they're in front. First to hit the mud, etc., and they clear the path for the rear. It's not unreasonable to expect they'll get the bulk of the dirt.

The same reason you will replace the fronts 3 times before you will have to replace the rear 1 time.
The front brakes are doing most of the work to stop the car

Front brakes do most of the work. If your rears are drums, that is probably why. If you have 4 wheel disc, it would be the same. Also the pads used can contribute to uncessary brake dust.

first the front brakes do most of the braking effort. since that is the case, the automakers use a softer front pad to prevent excessive rotor wear. since modern brake pads are organic in nature, rather than have asbestos like in the old days, the pads create more dust as they wear. you can pretty much eliminate this by going to a harder ceramic-metallic pad, and/or purchase a set of disc brake shields from a place like jc whitney. these go between the rotor and the wheel and prevent brake dust from landing on your wheels.

because most of the dirt and dust on the front wheels comes from the disc brakes ,that and there always the ones that seem to get the pot holes and mud holes found in most roads, but brake dust is the main cause for them getting real dirty, good luck with it hope this helps.

1) Drum brakes on rear
and/or if 4 wheel disc
2) Front brakes do about 75% of the stopping, so more friction, more heat, more brake dust

your brakes in front are disc brakes, so they are totally exposed, unlike your rear drum brakes, which a drum encases the brake shoes, keeping all that black dust inside, and not coating the front tires and wheels, put rear disc brakes and it will even out the dirty
