If Senator Obama is fortunate enough to win the Democratic nomination for President, he will need to try to balance the ticket. I would suggest somebody like former Virginia Governor Mark Warner.

Warner is from the South, as a Governor he has executive experience. The last two Democrats elected were from the South and served as Governors (Clinton and Carter). He nearly ran for president in this election cycle, but ultimately opted out. Had Virginia election laws been different, he would be in his second term as Governor. But, Virginia law does not allow a Governor to run for reelection.

Obama cannot nominate another member from the liberal wing of the party as he already has that sewn up. Obama's nomination would represent a sea change in American politics. To compound that change by then nominating Hillary Clinton for president would scare off enough independent voters leery of too much change at one time.

Obama politically can not choose Hillary as his running mate, as that would counter his message of 'change we can believe in'. Hillary Clinton is fatally associated with the old style of politics due to her connection with Bill. If Obama chose Hillary as running mate, he would have no chance of making it to the oval office. I think he'll choose Edwards or someone else besides Clinton.

Obama needs to balance out his lack of experience with the most experienced guy in the field. A governor and ambassador, Perfect Combo in Bill Richardson.

i don't think he can win. he lacks experience and if he is selected to run, you can bet all sorts of issues will come to the forefront regarding his support of his church and their activities. just my opinion, it will be interesting to see how this does play out.
