It sounds to me like he is a jerk! You weren't wrong in what you said...actually it was very, very nice of you.
With that being said, I would not give him the opportunity to be nasty to you again.

He meant he wishes it was a happy anniversary, but realizes it's more of a sad day for you instead of a happy day, since he wants a divorce.
I don't think he meant any malice in his statement.
It's a bittersweet day for you and him. Yes, it is the day you got married and reflects a day in happier times, but as things stand, this will be your last anniversary as a couple. I really don't think it was a dig, but more of "I'm sorry I want out and ruined this day for you."
I don't know what you did was wrong. You are trying to reach out, hoping for a good return. Unfortunately, you didn't get what you were hoping for. I'm sorry...............

Personally, if my soon to be ex were to send me something along those lines, I don't think I would have responded.
If the divorce is imminent, there was no reason to tell him Happy Anniversary to a demised relationship.
Unless you were fishing for a reconciliation, you should have stated so.

yes you were wrong and did you expect a "happy anniversary to you hunny" response back? He's trying to move along and you need to do the same.

He wants to leave you, but he is trying to make you feel bad? Hmmm.......... for a soldier that doesn't seem very manly, you know? Maybe he is regretting his decision.... maybe, even if he was the one who is bailing out of the marriage, he feels guilty to you. Maybe he misread what you wrote, thinking you were being sarcastic.
Either way, I am grateful for his sacrifice for our country... wish the war was over so our troops weren't in harms way...

if the message is as you said, it might not be a dig, just that he appreciates that it might not be as happy an anniversary as you'd hoped.

things happen for no reason at all.. case in point,, my divorce came as a shock to me,, but in time , all wounds healed,, made me a stronger person in many senses.. but also has made me very hesitant to pursue a serious relationship..

you weren't "wrong" but it's probably a very painful time for both of you, and if i got his message i would just take it as that it's now a painful day for you guys.
atleast he replied back.
