My two friends and I compete in dance on a national level. Angel and I want to compete with duets in lyrical. our other friend Kyla doesn't like ballet or lyrical and isn't that good at it. How do we tell her that we don't want to dance with her. She gets easily put off.

be honest .... that will be the way to explain
I watch the America's Got TAlent and the judges are very firm and honest in the answers to the marginal talent.
And they accept it with tear, but accept it.
Not everyone is the best.

I s there another type of dance she excels i that you also enjoy? If you're both decent at, say, tap, could you offer to compete a tap number? Even if you know you can't win with it, it might be easier than telling her she sucks at lyrical! Also, if she's good at another form you can play the "well i don't think you'd enjoy having to do ballet, but i know you are good at" card. and if you get your bum handed to you at comp, maybe it will get it out of her system. hey, you might do really well with something geared more toward her interests, without having to sacrifice lyrical or ballet with your other friend

well have her learn the choreography first, and help her to improve on her technique. also show her what competing on a national level requires and show her some of the people that she will compete against. if she doesnt get it, then just tell her you really like her as a friend, but you dont think she's ready for the competition.

Be completely honest with her, and say you want to try something with Angel. Then arrange something with Kyla sometime, too. Maybe, if all else fails, you can find a dance that you all like.
