John Ferguson Sr. died yesterday after a lengthy battle with prostate cancer. He was 68. Ferguson won 5 cups with the Habs and was a part of the now infamous Summit 72 series when he served as an assistant coach.
As a Leaf fan I hated Ferguson with reason but I'd have embraced him for what he was, a gritty, character player who played the game tough and hard every night if he'd have donned the Blue and White.
I thnk for today at least we should try to lay off his son. It can't be easy losing your dad.
RIP John Ferguson. Our prayers and thoughts are with his family and friends.

You know Puck, I'm with you in the JF Jr. camp for today. I've never seen John Ferguson play, but from what I have always been told by my grandfather (he is a huge Montreal Canadiens fan), he inspired a geat deal of fear out of opponents. He was never a dirty player by any means. A good talent evaluator with Ottawa and San Jose, Ferguson was a tough s.o.b. (and I mean that in a good way). Rest in peace John Ferguson (and don't forget...your line with Boom-Boom and Rocket is next on the ice in heaven's hockey game).

That's what I like about this section. As soon as I start to get fed up with some of the dopes on here, someone comes along and asks a great question or pulls a class act like this. Kudos, Puck! I don't remember seeing Ferguson Sr. playing, but he sounds like he was my kind of player. My prayers and thoughts are also with his family.

Yeah. John Ferguson.
When I was in Grade 7, for winning a spelling B, I got to choose from several Esso stickers for my collection of hockey players. John Ferguson was the prize pick that day and I got him!!!
It was always a kick for me to say he was my dad. John Ferguson is also my dad's and brother's name.
Rest In Peace Fergie!

I heard he was a pretty tough old dude. Not a Leaf fan so I won't have any trouble laying off his son.

JF's entire being exuded Old School hockey: grit, determination, talent, loyalty, hatred. He was one of those guys that you just didn't want to mess with. Period.
