Ok I have a Dell dimension 4600 and am thinking of getting a new video card. A GeForce 7600GT 256MB AGP. It says you would need a 400W PSU for this card. My computer has the stock right now. 250W and 325W max. Since the only thing I've ever added to my computer is another 512MB of ram (1 gig total) should i need another PSU for this card. My computer has a Cd drive and a DVD drive. So would i be ok with the stock PSU, or would I HAVE to buy another PSU. I've even seen another guy with the same system and same card i am going buy it with the stock PSU in. And he said it had no problems.Still I have concerns. Please help me. Thanks

Yeah your gona have to get a new PSU. The 7600 series and up need some dedicated power from the PSU for them to run. You could run the 250watt PSU.....but you would probably burn the card up within two days. You can either search for a 400watt Dell power supply, or order one off of newegg for cheap. But you might have to modify your case to make it a perfect fit....I have mounted my 500watt psu using 2 screws cause the power button is in the way. Try to get one with out a power button..then you should be set.

If that person you know is running the stock psu and using that vid card is probably on borrowed time. Need to get him to go in the Nvidia Control Panel and see what temperature the card is..I betcha its close to 70C or higher.

There is no such thing as a motherboard not handling it..lol
Its a matter if its got the right 20 or 24 pin connector. Dont call Dell for anything cause they are just going to say you need to order one from us. 450watt or greater with dual 12v rails will do you good.

initially inexpensive PSU are loud as a lawnmower. I continuously purchase a solid PSU for the structures I construct,I broke this rule two times, the 1st blew up in one day the different in 2 weeks. Its your call.

That new video card would consume about 40 watts and draw it mainly from the +12V rail. I doubt it if your current power supply could support the 7600GT. If it runs at all, you could be running the +12V rail HOT at full load. You might fry it shortly.

Do not rely on minimum recommendations. Get a bigger power supply w/ strong +12V rail (18 amps or more; dual rail is best). A bigger power supply runs cooler, lasts longer and gives you plenty of elbow room for uprades.

I think you do need a new PSU but before buying anything call dell and ask them if you could change you're PSU because maybe youre mother board wont be able to handle it ......

So call dell and ask them

I was about to change the PSU but they told me my motherboard would not handle it ..
