Michael Stipe, hands down. While U2 is excellent, REM was always on the cutting edge of "alternative" music throughout their career. Stipe is a creative musical genius.

Seeing that Michael Stipe and his band mates have all but dropped into obscurity I'd have to vote for Bono. U2 has had an amazing ability to keep their music fresh and new with each new album. Although they hit a slow spot during the late 90s with the mediocre "Pop," they managed to revive themselves again and reinvigorate their sound.

I'm not sure what REM's been up to these days but judging from their last few albums, I'm not that interested.
