ThenI have to go to settings and change it,
Then the program stops responding!

try installing/reinstalling the correct/compatible vga (display ) driver

Try this: close as many programs as you can without affecting the operation of the system. (For example - if you have a bunch of programs running in the background that you don't use every time you use your laptop, then you can close them without affecting the system.)

Then - change your resolution to the way you want it. Shut down your system completely, then start it again. If the same thing happens, then the system is probably starting a program that requires a higher resolution. You will need to find that program and stop it from automatically starting every time you start your laptop. Good luck.
