I would be inclined to inversely associate them. Red is actually a lower frequency than the rest of the colors, yet to me, it seems like red should indicate a high frequency tone rather than a low one. So I would map audio pitches in the reverse of the rainbow, ie, lowest pitch equals violet, next equals blue, etc, until highest pitch is red.

This has been done. I've seen several water fountain displays that combine music/sound with colored lights as the water dances to the music. There was one in the Kona Coast area of the big island of Hawaii. It was located in the shopping mall of the village there...but I can't remember the name of the village...sorry.

Anyway, like do..re..mi..fa..so..la..ti..do for the notes, light has Roy G Biv, the mnemonic for the spectrum. R is red, o is orange, y is yellow, g is green, b is blue, i is indigo, and v is violet. Thus you might match red to do, o to re, y to me, and so on.

As the red side is the lower frequency for light, matching the lower frequency of the first do for sound, the higher frequency violet would end up matching the ti note in higher end of the music scale. Of course the light spectrum has in between frequencies as well. So one could do yellow-green for example. That might correspond to a flat or sharp on the music scale...E sharp possibly.

Pick a simple song that lies in the eight note octave range. Match the lights to the song...and there you have it.
